Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth Overview

The average adult has thirty-two teeth by age eighteen: sixteen teeth on the top and sixteen teeth on the bottom. Each tooth in the mouth has a specific name and function. The teeth in the front of the mouth (incisors, canine and bicuspid teeth) are ideal for grasping and biting food into smaller pieces while the back teeth, or molar teeth, are used to grind food up into a consistency suitable for swallowing.

However, the average mouth is made to hold only 28 teeth. It can be painful when 32 teeth try to fit in a mouth that holds only 28 teeth. These four other teeth are your third molars, also known as “wisdom teeth”.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

Anthropologists believe wisdom teeth were the evolutionary answer to our ancestor’s early diet of coarse, unprocessed food. We needed wisdom teeth for the extra chewing power they provided. Now with modern food and the use of utensils, wisdom teeth are unnecessary for chewing food. Evolution has also shown that over time, our jaws have become relatively smaller in relation to our enlarged cranial vault required for brain development. This imbalance of unnecessary teeth in an environment of less room to erupt into the mouth causes many wisdom teeth to be impacted and not able to erupt fully into the mouth.

Please remember all of the procedures described here are surgical procedures. These surgical procedures are best performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the only dental specialists who are fully trained in all of these surgical procedures. Dr. Kienle, Dr. Steinkeler and Dr. Gunawardena are all fully trained and experienced in these surgical procedures. All doctors in our practice are board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery and in anesthesia and have also earned both a medical and a dental degree.

Flagship Oral, Facial, and Dental Implant Surgery is the only practice in the Delaware Valley/Tri-State area where all of the surgeons have both their medical and dental degrees and are board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery and anesthesia, and in which all of our surgical facilities are fully accredited by the Joint Commission. I would highly recommend the OMS center in Fort Washington, especially for wisdom teeth extraction. They did a perfect job on mine.

I was worried about my procedure before I went here but they did a great job with no complications. My brother had the same good experience here as well. Highly recommend. Also, as this procedure was done during COVID, I was glad they used all precautions for patient safety.

My son had his wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Steinkeler. He was very informative and suggested a non narcotic pain medicine instead of narcotics that their office is offering and I would recommend it to everyone. Not covered by insurance ($300 or so) but very worth it instead of getting a scrip for opioid. It lasts for 72 hours and my son takes motrin here and there now that it has been 4 days since the removal.

I can't say enough great things about this practice! I had scheduled a consultation to have my wisdom teeth taken out for the last week of July. Over the weekend, my pain went from manageable to unbearable. I called th office and spoke to Nancy (nurse) as soon as they opened Monday and explained my situation. Nancy was able to schedule an appointment for me to meet with Dr. Kienle right away. My intiial consultation was great and surgery was scheduled first thing this morning after Dr.Kienle saw how inflamed my wisdom teeth were and how much pain I was in. The procedure was amazing! I explained to Dr Kienle and the nurses how nervous I was and he made sure I was in no pain and had no anixety. I was knocked out so quick I woke up and they told me we were finished. My only regret is that I did not get them taken out sooner like my dentist recommended. Thank you so much to everyone involved! I would highly reccommend their services to everyone!

I just wanted to write this review to give accolades when they are due. For Dr. Kienle, and his staff, they are definitely due. I was first scheduled to have all 4 wisdom teeth extracted in February 2020. Dr. Kienle noticed there was something not right with my EKG on the day of surgery, and would not perform surgery until a cardiac clearance was completed. It was found that I did have a mild underlying cardiac condition, which I never knew I had. Dr. Kienle noticed it right away. Dr. Kienle is an excellent Oral Surgeon AND Physician. I was then rescheduled for Oral Surgery in March. Covid arrived and my oral surgery was cancelled in March, April, then May. Everytime Dr. Kienle's office had to cancel because of Covid, they made sure I was not in any pain or had infections, as they would be there for emergencies only. They really do care about your well being. Finally, in June, when elective surgeries were allowed to be performed again, I was scheduled. I was very apprehensive about the surgery ( I don't like dentists in general), but Dr. Kienle and his staff were so kind, and reassuring. Before I knew it, I woke up with gauze in my mouth and surgery was over. A nurse walked me out to the car where my husband was waiting (because of Covid he had to stay in parking lot). Everyone in the Warminster office is so kind, funny, and professional. They really put you at ease. Bleeding, and bleeding time was minimal. Swelling was non existent. Pain for having all 4 Wisdom Teeth out at the age of 50 was very minimal, and I was able to get away with just taking Advil and Tylenol the day of, and the day after surgery. By day 2, I was still a little sore, but did not need any pain medicine at all. Recovery went smoothly, and better than expected. Dr. Kienle is an excellent Oral Surgeon, and I would highly recommend him. In fact, I already have to 4 of my coworkers. Thanks again to Dr. Kienle and his staff!

Dr. G, the nurses, and front desk staff all made the process of having my wisdom teeth removed as pleasant and painless as possible. They consistently made me feel both informed and comfortable with every step of the process and ensured I had all of the information and resources I needed to ease the recovery process. I would most definitely recommend this office to any other patient in need of wisdom teeth removal or any other oral surgery procedure.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed and when 1 of them got infected, they made time for me immediately and did a revision surgery without charging me any extra. Dr. Steinkeller is very patient and understanding, despite my fear of needles and made me as comfortable as possible. Highly recommend him!

Patient Review by Leslie S

I couldn’t be more pleased with Dr.Kienle , the nurses and entire office staff members on my surgery day. I had all four teeth extracted at the same time along with two other teeth being addressed that had been causing me discomfort. From the minute my husband and I arrived at the front office we were greeted with the friendliest personalities as they handled pre-surgery paperwork, payment and notes for us to take for missing work. When they took me back to the room for surgery they ensured I was aware of everything they were doing and made sure all of my questions were answered. Then came surgery time, I only remember asking them how long it would be and they just said, the next time we talk, we’ll be waking you up to go over to recovery! This was true! It felt like 5 mins and they were done. In reality it was about an hour or so but I had no clue. I didn’t have any pain , just felt a little loopy and tired as expected from the meds. I figured maybe the next day or so I would be feeling horrible, but no! I was still doing great, I was able to go to a hair appt, enjoy a friends 40th bday party, make a scarecrow for my daughters class and entertain my children and their cousins for a mini Halloween gathering all in the same weekend that I got my wisdom teeth taken out. All of my family and friends were surprised and asked for the office information to schedule appts. , lolll! My husband was my driver for the day due to the sedation and agreed their staff was awesome and accommodating from start to finish, even walking with us all the way to put me into the car after surgery! I don’t want to have to get dental work done, but if it’s happening they are the only offices I’ll allow to do any further work! I’m simply spoiled by their great service! Thank you all for everything!

Dr. Kienle extracted my son's wisdom teeth. We could not have been more pleased with him and his entire staff. He did an excellent job. My son had very minimal pain, swelling and complications I did have a few questions after the procedure and needed to call to speak to the nurse. She spoke at length with me and was able to assure me that the symptom he was having was normal. All in all, it was a fantastic experience and we would highly recommend this office. Thank you.

While I was waiting for my daughter to get her wisdom teeth removed, I informally surveyed other parents in the waiting room and asked about their experiences. They all were consistent with their opinion.....Dr. Kienle is the best. I will def. recommend others.

Patient Review by E G

We were very worried about the length of the wisdom teeth roots, however, Dr. G. was very confident there wouldn't be any issues with the nerve and .... he was right. So relieved! And my daughter felt almost 100% better after 24 hours. We were really happy with everything. Thank you.
