Bone Grafting

Major & Minor Bone Grafting

Missing teeth over a period of time can cause your jaw bone to atrophy, or resorb. This often results in poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for the placement of dental implants as well as long term shifting of remaining teeth and changes to facial structure. Many patients, in these situations, may not be candidates for conventional dental implants without bone grafting.

Fortunately, today Dr. Kienle, Dr. Steinkeler and Dr. Gunawardena have the ability to grow bone where it is needed with bone grafting techniques. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, but it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance for patients who are not candidates for conventional dental implants without bone grafting.

Major Bone Grafting

Drs. Kienle, Steinkeler and Gunawardena use bone grafting to repair dental implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous tooth extractions, gum disease, or injuries. The bone is either obtained from a tissue bank (donated human bone) or your own bone is harvested from the jaw, hip, cranium or tibia (below the knee). Sinus bone grafts are used to replace bone in the posterior upper jaw. In addition, special membranes may be utilized that dissolve under the gum to protect the dental bone graft, as well as encourage bone regeneration. This technique is called guided bone regeneration, or guided tissue regeneration.

Major bone grafts are typically performed to repair defects of the jaws or facial skeleton. These defects may arise as a result of traumatic injuries, tumor surgery, or congenital defects. Large defects are repaired using the patient’s own bone or a combination of the patient’s own bone and donated bone. This bone is harvested from a number of different areas depending on the size needed. The skull (cranium), hip (iliac crest), and lateral knee (tibia), are common donor sites. Drs. Kienle, Steinkeler and Gunawardena do these procedures in a hospital operating room and require a hospital stay.

Surgical procedures such as dental bone grafting are best performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, who are the only dental specialists fully trained in these and other oral surgery procedures. Drs. Kienle, Steinkeler and Gunawardena are highly qualified, board certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery and in anesthesia, and have also earned both a medical and a dental degree.
