Dilshan Gunawardena MD, DMD, FACS
Meet Dr. Gunawardena
Dr. Dilshan Gunawardena, also known as “Dr. G,” was raised in Studio City California. He obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. He then decided to further his studies at the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree (DMD). While at Tufts, Dr. G was elected class treasurer and maintained that position throughout his four years at Tufts dental school. Dr. G was also awarded the Dean’s List honor for his high performance on the National Dental Board Exams. His most memorable and rewarding experience in dental school was going on a Haiti Humanitarian Mission Trip, where he provided dental care to the underserved regions of Port-au-Prince.
Dr. G went on to complete his medical school education at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and earned his Doctorate in Medicine (MD) degree. He then completed his General Surgery Internship at the same institution. Dr. G went on to complete a six-year residency and training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In his final year at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, he was chosen as Chief Resident. Following his residency, he joined a private practice in Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania, and achieved his board certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Shortly after, Dr. G was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons (FACS). This designation is only afforded to a surgeon after a rigorous evaluation of an individual’s training, qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct. There are only a handful of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in this country that have received this distinction.
Dr. Gunawardena practices the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with a focus on dental implants, complex bone grafting, corrective jaw surgery, wisdom teeth, maxillofacial trauma, facial reconstruction and pathology
Additionally, Dr. Gunawardena has hospital privileges at Abington Medical Center, where he takes trauma calls, teaches in the resident clinic, and strives to provide quality care to the members of this community. As a board-certified surgeon, Dr. G stays current with the latest technologies and procedures to provide cutting-edge care to his patients. Furthermore, he continues to publish articles in reputable journals, participates in continuing education, and educates residents in training.
When he is not performing surgeries he enjoys working out, and long walks with his wife and two energetic children.
