Meet Dr. Schelkun

Photo of Retired Oral Surgeon, Dr. Schelkun Dr. Mike Schelkun was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin as a zoology major and received early acceptance into the Marquette University School of Dentistry, where he graduated at the top of his class in 1983. Dr. Schelkun completed a four-year residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and Truman Medical Center, one of the nation’s most highly regarded training programs in this specialty.

Dr. Schelkun realized early on in his training that to have just a dental degree was not enough education and training necessary to treat and provide complete oral and maxillofacial surgical, medical and dental care for his patients that required it. Dr. Schelkun believed it was necessary for him to obtain a medical degree to provide the proper level of expertise and care for his patients and to round out his specialty training. Dr. Schelkun was accepted into the University of Alabama School of Medicine with advanced standing and completed and received his medical degree (MD) from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Following graduation in 1990, he moved to Chicago to complete a year of General Surgery training at the Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center. This program of study included extended rotations in plastic and reconstructive surgery, craniofacial surgery, and otorhinolaryngology (ENT).

Dr. Schelkun has been in private practice in Pennsylvania since 1991. His main interests within his specialty are facial reconstructive surgery, dental implant surgery, the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, general and sedation anesthesia. As a North American faculty member of the AO/ASIF (Association for the Study of Internal Fixation), Dr. Schelkun is a recognized authority in facial and reconstructive surgery. The AO/ASIF provides training for surgeons and surgical personnel on the proper use and the most up-to-date techniques of Rigid Fixation for facial reconstruction. He is a past president of the Montgomery-Bucks Dental Society and a past president of his regional specialty society, the Delaware Valley Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has lectured throughout the country and has authored articles in his field.

Dr. Schelkun is also a devoted family man who enjoys spending time with his wife and their four children. Together with his family, Dr. Schelkun is active in his church community and sporting activities. They especially enjoy water and snow skiing, boating, fishing, and shooting sports.

A Note from Dr. Schelkun upon his Retirement

I have retired from active surgical practice in 2019. It has been an incalculable blessing and pleasure to have been able to serve our community for the past almost 30 years. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has been my lifelong dream. Having the opportunity to have been part of this outstanding professional Dental and Medical community and supportive patient population has been my professional life’s fulfillment. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all my professional colleagues and friends for allowing me to participate in the care of their patients. I also would like to thank all you patients I have had the opportunity to counsel and treat. It has been immensely rewarding to have been able to be part of your lives and assist you in your needs. Finally, I want to thank my partners and staff that have assisted me in building the best possible Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical practice. The practice remains in good hands. God Bless.
